Political Reactions
Mike Minogue, the Republican gubernatorial nominee and Oliver’s running mate, publicly called for Oliver to suspend his campaign. "I am extremely disappointed. Shawn is lucky to be alive and lucky that no one innocent was hurt," Minogue wrote on X. "There is no excuse for driving under the influence."
Minogue stated that after speaking with Oliver, he asked him to suspend his campaign immediately. "When elected, I will formally ask for his resignation," Minogue said. He added that Oliver needs to "put his family first" and "do the work to ensure this never happens again."
Oliver confirmed the suspension of his campaign in a post on X. "The election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters," Oliver said. "I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey and ask that my family's privacy be respected during this difficult time."
Amy Carnevale, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Republican Party, supported the decision. "The MassGOP supports the decision of Shawn Oliver to suspend his campaign for Lieutenant Governor," Carnevale said. "Lives were put at risk and that is never acceptable."
New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell, a Democrat, described the allegations as "deeply concerning." "The public deserves to hear his explanation of what happened," Mitchell said in a statement posted to Facebook. A spokesperson for Democratic Gov. Maura Healey, who is running for re-election, said they had no comment at this time.
