Match Performance and Conditions
The match lasted 84 minutes and was played on the Stadium court, a surface Medvedev noted was significantly different from the Grandstand court where he had played his previous two matches. In his on-court interview, Medvedev addressed comments made by Novak Djokovic, who had recently lost to Hubert Hurkacz in his opening match. Djokovic had stated that the Shanghai court was much faster than the court in Beijing, where Djokovic had won the China Open title days prior.
"First of all, super strange, the court is like three times faster than the other one," Medvedev said. "And so when I heard Novak after his match and he said the court is so much faster than Beijing, I was like okay let's see. The next day I played, but I played on Grandstand. I was like what is he talking about? I mean, it's the same or even slower."
Medvedev explained that the Stadium court felt much faster during his warm-up, requiring him to adjust his strategy. "And this one in the warm-up, I was like, it's so fast. Which is good for me, but I needed to reset because it's a completely different court from what I played before. But that helped me I think. I played really aggressive. I put a lot of pressure on him and managed to beat him," he said.
