Impact on Emergency Services
Bell Aliant confirmed the service disruption on social media. "Some customers in Newfoundland and Labrador may be unable to make voice calls, including 911 calls," the company posted. "We are working to restore service as quickly as possible. If you require emergency assistance, please go directly to the nearest fire station, police station or hospital emergency department."
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Newfoundland and Labrador reported that the outage is affecting their telephone services. "A widespread outage is currently impacting RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador’s telephone services, including our non-emergency line and some 911 calls," the RCMP said in a news release. They advised anyone needing police assistance to call their Operational Communications Centre at 709-693-6271. The RCMP noted that officers remain on patrol and available to respond to calls for service.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) also reported issues with their non-emergency line due to the "widespread telecommunications outage." However, the RNC stated that there are no known impacts to 911 calls for their jurisdiction. "Non-emergent complaints can still be filed online," the RNC advised.
