Diplomatic Mediation and Political Context
Amidst the military activity, a Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran on the evening of November 2 to intensify mediation efforts. This marks the third time the Qatari side has visited Tehran for mediation within a week, aiming to push Iran and the US "closer to reaching an agreement" to ease regional tensions, according to Iran's Mehr News Agency.
US officials have provided conflicting signals regarding the conflict. US Vice President JD Vance stated he is optimistic about a "negotiated settlement," while President Trump noted that if an agreement is not reached, military strikes "could happen." Trump also stated on November 2 that the US launched operations to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Iranian officials have maintained a firm stance. According to Reuters, Iranian senior officials stated the country is "far from reaching an agreement to end the war with the US" and that excessive US demands will not be accepted. Iranian military spokesperson Akraminia stated on November 3 that any further aggressive US actions would be met with an "immediate response that is more decisive and broader in scope" than previous actions.
