Two people die in Corsica floods after vehicle swept away
Severe flooding struck the French island of Corsica this week, and local authorities stated on November 6 that the disaster has resulted in two deaths, according to China News Service.
According to French media citing local government sources, a car was swept away by floodwaters in Corsica late on November 5. Rescue personnel went to the scene early on November 6 to carry out rescue operations. The driver was rescued via helicopter, but the two passengers in the car could not be saved and were found dead shortly thereafter. Relevant investigations have been launched. The road section where the incident occurred is currently completely closed to vehicle traffic.
The recent severe flooding in Corsica was mainly caused by extreme heavy rainfall. The South Corsica department saw heavy rainfall. The two municipalities most severely affected, Vico and Conca, recorded rainfall totals of 204 millimeters and 279 millimeters, respectively, over the past two days, equivalent to the region's total rainfall for two months. The water level at the Barra Bridge near Vico exceeded 5 meters on November 5, whereas the normal water depth at this location is usually only 1.1 meters. Videos show that multiple areas in South Corsica were affected by floods, with roads washed away, and some residents have been relocated to temporary shelters.
The interior minister said two people died when their vehicle was swept away in flooding caused by heavy rain on the French island of Corsica, according to a Reuters report carried by Devdiscourse.
