Background and Investigation
Brand rose to fame as a stand-up comedian and actor, hosting shows such as "Big Brother's Big Mouth" and starring in films including "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek." In recent years, he has focused on podcasting and online influencing.
The criminal charges follow a 2023 joint investigation by The Sunday Times of London and Channel 4’s documentary "Dispatches," which published allegations of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse. Brand strongly denied these allegations at the time. Following the broadcast, the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation.
Jaswant Narwal, the CPS’s chief crown prosecutor, addressed the decision to charge Brand. "We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4, Sunday Times and Times investigation in September 2023," Narwal said. "We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault."
Narwal also noted that "criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial."
