Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane became the NHL's career leader in assists among U.S.-born players, surpassing Phil Housley's record during a game against the Winnipeg Jets.
Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane achieved a significant career milestone on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, by becoming the National Hockey League’s career leader in assists among players born in the United States.
The record was set during a game against the Winnipeg Jets in Chicago. Kane, a right wing wearing number 88, recorded his 895th career assist on a power-play goal scored by center Connor Bedard. This goal opened the scoring in the first period of the match.
By reaching 895 assists, Kane surpassed the previous American-born record held by defenseman Phil Housley. Housley had accumulated 894 assists over the course of 1,496 games. Kane achieved his new total in his 1,377th career game.
Kane, who is 37 years old and from Buffalo, New York, is currently in his 20th season in the NHL. This assist increased his career point total to 1,404. Last year, Kane set the record for the most points among American NHL players.
Kane’s career with the Blackhawks began when he was selected first overall by the team in the 2007 draft. During his first 16 NHL seasons with Chicago, he won three Stanley Cups. He was also named the NHL’s Most Valuable Player and leading scorer in 2016.
In July, Kane signed a two-year contract to return to Chicago. The team has been a central part of his professional history, where he established his legacy before this recent milestone.
The assist occurred on a power-play goal by Bedard, who wears number 98 for the Blackhawks. The game took place on Thursday night in Chicago. Photos from the event show Kane celebrating the goal with Bedard during the first period. The opposing team was the Winnipeg Jets.
This achievement highlights Kane's longevity and consistent playmaking ability in the NHL. By surpassing Phil Housley, Kane solidifies his status as the most prolific American-born passer in league history. The milestone adds to his extensive list of accolades, which includes three Stanley Cup championships and an MVP award. As Kane continues his 20th season, this record underscores his enduring impact on the sport and his role as a key player for the Chicago Blackhawks.
