The Oleshky Ceasefire
The meeting follows a localized humanitarian truce in Oleshky, a town in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, which began on October 27 and lasted six days. The truce allowed for the evacuation of hundreds of people from the town, which was home to approximately 2,000 residents on the brink of starvation.
Melania Trump posted on X that the mission was a success, "delivering critical aid to the region and enabling the evacuation of nearly 800 people," and added that she hoped Oleshky "serves as a foundation for lasting peace between both nations."
According to the first lady's office, she acted as the "exclusive intermediary" through channels established while working to reunite children separated from their families. The circumstances in Oleshky reportedly came to her attention during a private discussion at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, stated last month that the humanitarian situation in Oleshky had become so dire that some residents were forced to eat grass and weeds without access to medicine, clean water, or electricity.
