M20 Reopens After Lorry Fire Between Junctions 3 and 1
Drivers faced severe delays on the M20 London-bound carriageway between Junction 3, the Addington Interchange, and Junction 1, the Swanley Interchange, after a lorry fire, KentOnline reports.
Just before 6am, police officers informed National Highways the road was blocked due to the blaze. Two fire engines were called to the scene and the carriageway was closed.
Just before 9.30am, the fire service said crews wearing breathing apparatus were working to extinguish the fire. Police were also in attendance, and all traffic within the closure was released past the scene this morning.
In an update at around 10.45am, National Highways said: “The HGV was carrying cardboard and is at risk of reigniting, Kent Fire and Rescue have now dampened down the load.”
At 2.39pm, National Highways stated that recovery and clear-up crews removed the vehicle and debris, and no resurfacing works were found to be required.
Shortly after 3pm, Kent Highways confirmed the road had reopened.
There was previous congestion to Junction 4 for Leybourne, and queues on the A20 diverting past Brands Hatch. Vehicles were being diverted via local routes.
