Career-First Semi-Final Appearance
Kartal, 24, is competing in only her third tournament since returning from a six-month absence due to a stress fracture in her back. According to Sky Sports, she became the lowest-ranked player to reach the semi-finals in Wuhan. Her ranking is projected to rise to No 87 following this result.
Speaking on-court after the match, Kartal reflected on the difficulty of the contest against the Ukrainian player. "Despite winning the first set pretty comfortably, I knew what a great fighter she [Svitolina] is, so I knew that until the very last point was played, I was never safe," Kartal said. She added, "Super proud of the determination I managed to show in that match, and I just think it was solid composure from me throughout."
Kartal also noted the significance of the achievement in her career. "I'm breaking new ground this week. I've never reached a semis of a WTA 1000 and like I've said I absolutely love playing here and playing on these courts. The atmosphere was amazing today," she stated.
