Impact on Trade and Canada
The election outcome has significant implications for Canada-U.S. relations, particularly regarding ongoing trade tensions. Asa McKercher, a Canada-U.S. relations expert and research chair at St. Francis Xavier University, suggested that a Democratic victory could provide Prime Minister Mark Carney more leverage in Washington. McKercher noted that the win could be seen as a "pretty big repudiation of Mr. Trump's agenda from the war in Iran to the tariffs, to various other sort of policies that he's pursued."
However, experts cautioned that a Democratic-controlled Congress may not immediately resolve trade issues. Nicolas Schmitt, a professor emeritus at Simon Fraser University and an expert in international trade, stated that while lawmakers could provide a "more meaningful way hear the argument, the contrary argument against the tariffs," it remains uncertain if they can successfully implement policy changes. Schmitt noted that the impact of tariffs is already visible in sectors such as steel, aluminum, and lumber, resulting in layoffs in Canada and increasing costs in the United States.
