Congressional Results and Senate Shifts
In the battle for the Senate, Democrats secured a majority by flipping several Republican-held seats, including those in Maine, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina. They also successfully defended open seats in Michigan and New Hampshire, according to Fox News.
In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won the Senate race, defeating Republican Mike Rogers. El-Sayed, a former public health official, will succeed retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters and will become the nation's first Muslim senator, according to The Mirror.
While Democrats secured the majority, several Senate races remained too close to call as votes were counted. In Mississippi, Republican incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democratic challenger Scott Colom appeared deadlocked. In Alaska, Democratic challenger former Rep. Mary Peltola was leading GOP incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan, though results in Alaska are expected to take days to be called due to the ranked choice voting system and hand-counted votes in rural areas, according to Fox News and The Mirror.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats cleared the 218-seat threshold required to recapture the chamber, according to Fox News.
