Legal challenges regarding California ballots
On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected an emergency request from the Trump administration to force California to sideline mail ballots that the Justice Department claims may have been cast by noncitizens. The court issued a one-sentence order and did not explain its reasoning.
Earlier, US District Judge James Boasberg ordered the Trump administration to stop demanding that California election officials "segregate ballots cast by people on its lists of suspected noncitizens." Boasberg found that the lists compiled by the administration were flawed and included many people who were wrongly listed as noncitizens.
US Solicitor General D. John Sauer told the court, “This office has been informed that the United States has identified more than 20,000 individuals who appear to be registered to vote in California based on publicly available information at the time that information was received, but who, in the United States’ view, are likely not U.S. citizens.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that the administration's attempt was a "baseless attack on California’s electoral process."
