Addressing Recent Performance
The announcement comes amid a period of adjustment for the Call of Duty franchise. According to The Game Business, last year’s Black Ops 7 saw commercial lows not seen for nearly two decades, with European launch sales 50% below the previous year’s title. In the US, it finished the year at No.5, the lowest ranking for a Call of Duty since 2008’s World at War. Additionally, Battlefield 6 was reported as the best-selling shooter of 2025, ending Call of Duty’s long-standing dominance in that category.
Data from Ampere cited by The Game Business indicates that Call of Duty’s monthly player count, which was routinely around 40 million in 2024, has dropped to the mid-20 million range in 2026. Bahl acknowledged these challenges, stating, "I don’t think we were happy with every aspect of last year’s game, and we heard the feedback loud and clear." He emphasized that Modern Warfare 4 aims to return to a "grounded military shooter" that is "cinematic" and "authentic."
